In true march madness fashion, the Monstars had to beat the top two seeds in the bracket to claim the championship on Wednesday night, and they did just that by a razor thin margin. In their first game of the night, a pick six by Heather A proved to the be the difference in a 44-42 victory over the top seeded Rebelz. In the finals against the veteran Tenacious D team, the difference was a great defensive team effort and a clutch catch by Dave S on a fourth and long play to continue the drive under 2 minutes. In the end, Tenacious D had one last chance to for a hailmary, but the pass fell incomplete and the Monstars held on for a 29-28 championship victory.
Dave Schmaltz gets our final player of the week of the season for his UGE catch in the championship game. With his team holding onto a one point lead inside of two minutes to go in the game, Monstars had a fourth and long to get or risk giving the ball back to Tenacious D with a short field. The QB put the ball where only the big man could get it and Dave caught right on the sideline tapping both feet in bounds. That clutch catch gave them enough time to run out the majority of the clock and they were able to hold on for a one point victory in the championship game.
Let me paint you a picture: 2 minutes left, tie game. 4th down and goal, offense needs a score. Andrew L jumped in front of a pass in the endzone and ran it all the way to the opposite numbers, setting his team up for what would be the game winning score. Playoffs are a time where elite players stand out and make plays for their team, and Andrew L did just that on Wednesday night.
Megan "The Claw" Luk earns this week's Player of the Game for fighting through adversity en route to a victory. Megan was rocking a nice cast on her left hand, and her teammates dubbed her "The Claw". She played as if nothing was wrong at all, batting down 3 passes and reeling in a TD. Well done!
