For the Championship game for Winter Midcore Volleyball at First Baptist Mondays, two of Underdog's most spirited and committed teams, Safe Sets and BAdgers went head to head for the playoff title. It was a intense 3 game match up that had each player fighting to the end.
Each team was strong from the beginning with powerful kills and amazing blocks on both sides of the court. But what really made this match was the series of aces from Safe Sets players, Alex Wong and Zach Mendelsohn.
While BAdgers took the first game with a strong 25-20 victory, the tides began to turn by the middle of the second match when Alex Wong had 7 point service streak to bring the Safe Sets back into running for the playoff title with a 25-18 win.
Both teams continued to perform amazing plays with confidence and enthusiasm, with victory dances and comic relief (thanks to Safe Sets captain Matt Palzkill) following nearly every play.
The excitement and superb sportsmanship by both teams made this match a enjoyable experience to watch.
By the third and final match of the Championship game, Underdog staff was on the edge of their seats.
As the final set of the Championship match began, Safe Sets took the lead quickly, going up 4-1. BAdgers captain, Greg Standerfer, bolstered his teams spirits with a killer spike to bring the serve back to the BAdgers side. After a tight set to the net, Safe Sets regained serve possession and once again regained the lead with powerful topspin serves powered by Zach Mendelsohn. Safe Sets continued to pound away with spike after spike and supreme digs as the game continued on. However, the BAdgers pushed with equally power slamming spikes and unbreakable blocks by Todd Hummel who became a solid wall.
However, while the BAdgers continued to rally back and forth with Safe Sets, they ultimately could not push through the ending service streak lead by Safe Sets, Callie Querin who brought the final game point with the Safe Sets defeating the BAdgers 25-16.
While both teams played a tremendous game, in the end, Safe Sets earned their title, not just this Monday night against the worthiest of worthy opponents, BAdgers, but all season long. Their skills showed in the first week and continued to shine, along with their positive attitudes sportsmanship, and uplifting humor throughout the season. Congratulations to one of our favorite Underdog teams, Safe Sets!!!
