Jimmy Kicks Competition in The Pants for Championship Win!
Joke Writes Itself!

We wish we could say it was close, but Sunday was Kick Me In The Jimmy's day, from start to finish. They started against the always solid Das Boot, and it was close, but for a short time. Thanks to the offensive explosion from Chris- who accounted for over half of his teams runs, either by kicking them in or scoring them himself- the clan of Jimmy was able to secure a convincing win and punch their ticket for the championship.
Meanwhile, Hammer Pants made their own convincing statement in a high scoring game against an uncharacteristically mistake prone Pirates of The Burning Sea. The Pirates remained close throughout the entire game, but never lead, until Hammer Pants were finally able to pull away for good late in the game, winning 14-9.
The championship stage was set- the big kicks and expert bunts of the offense-minded Jimmy's, verses the all-star defense from players like Gavin and Jackie on Hammer Pants.
Again, the game began close as both teams put forth solid efforts, but Kick Me in The Jimmy began to pull away by mid-game, and it was their catcher who made the play of the game, perhaps breaking the will of Hammer Pants and putting the dagger in their heart. After a good base hit, a Hammer Pants runner looked sure to score from third, getting the team back in it, but a long relay throw, and a PERFECTLY executed deflection by the catcher (yes, it was on purpose, he says), tagged him out literally inches before his foot crossed home plate. The Jimmys erupted, and it was smooth sailing from then on, as they cruised to a 13-3 victory.

Congratulations Kick Me In the Jimmy, on your Summer '08 Kickball Championship!

Turkey Snazzlers Edge Supercalifornia Pants for First Ever Championship!
9 Inning Upset is One For The Ages!

And sometimes the best just come out to play. Sure, we're Underdog, but there was no "laid-back league" or "everyday players" Sunday afternoon in Fremont; just a knock-down, drag out fight between two heavyweights at the top of their game. What could we do but just watch and take it all in?
In one corner, the perennial favorites, umpteen- time champions, the 'team in black'; Supercalifornia pants. In the the other corner, it was the upstart Turkey Snazzlers, who made their hardcore debut in last season's playoffs, getting thrashed in a nice welcome to their new division. The Snazzlers had learned their lesson well, and had a shot at a championship in their first full season in hardcore.
Rest assured, the game did not disappoint. The name of the game was defense and pitching. Savvy Supercali vet Doug Orwiler had every manner of curve and break on his pitches, while newcomer and Snazzler captain Robert Sjoberg- while decked out in turkey feather crown and red one-piece thermal underwear (no, we're not kidding)- threw vicious heat all game. The teams had mutual respect for each other, and late in the game, Supercali's experience had them ahead, but just barely, clinging to a 1-0 lead.
Things got dicey in the top of the sixth, though, as the Snazzlers finally found an opening. After a quick run scored, a third base-runner got the best of a Supercali fielder in a cat and mouse game, forcing an errant overthrow and scoring on it. In one play, the Snazzlers had taken their first lead, and were an inning and a half away from upsetting the defending champs.
It came down to do or die for Supercali in the bottom of the seventh, and they DID... for the most part. After finally tying up the game, the Pants loaded up the bases with just one out on some crucial fielding mistakes by the Snazzlers. Even a pop fly to the outfield would seal a repeat championship for them. But a short liner to third gave the Snazzlers the miracle double play they were looking for, as the third baseman caught the out and then quickly tagged third before the runner could get back. The Snazzlers rejoiced as we went to extra innings, tied at two.
Each team tacked on a run in the eighth, but neither could break away, and we moved to the top of the 9th, where the Underdog league rules became a factor.
Each team started their half inning with their last two outs as baserunners on 2nd and 3rd, and 1 out already in the inning, rules designed to bring about a conclusion one way or another. A base hit could put either team up buy two; a huge advantage in a game so close. On the other hand, a quick out leaves you at the brink of elimination. The Snazzlers were held to one run in the top half of the 9th, and once again it was do or die for Supercali. This time, however, it was Rob's clutch strikeout that secured the second out, and left the Snazzlers one away from victory. Supercali had one last hope, but a pop fly to the infield ended the game, and handed the Snazzlers their first ever championship in fine upset style.
In addition, it was apparently captain Rob's last day in town, and family and friends were on hand to both witness and join in the celebration.

Congratulations to both teams for one of the most exciting championship games we've had in a while, and to The Turkey Snazzlers, Summer '08 Hardcore Kickball Champs!
