Sometimes the hardest part of being a Captain is getting all of your players to pay their share of the league fee on time. The TeamPayer system allows Captains to make payment requests of their players via email - the players are then able to pay their requested amount directly to the league online with a credit card - and the balance of the league fee that the Captain is responsible for is reduced accordingly:

Captains can use TeamPayer from the time that a team is confirmed into the league until the Week 2 Payment Deadline. Just as in the past, the Captain is responsible for the remaining league balance as of Week 2 of the team's season. If there are TeamPayer Requests that have been unpaid at the Week 2 Deadline, they expire and the Captain has to collect fees from individual members the old fashioned way, in person. Captains are free to use TeamPayer to submit the remaining balance online, or to bring a check to the Week 2 league game.

TeamPayer is available in the Captain's Lounge:

Captains
  • No more collecting checks and cash for deposit before paying the entire team fee
  • Payments are all in one place: know who has paid and who still needs to contribute
  • Get player commitments before the season starts
Players
  • Use your credit or debit card to pay online
  • No need to bring your checkbook or cash to the game with your football cleats or your kickball
  • Makes life easier for your team's Captain

Captains

I have no problem getting checks or cash from my team...do I have to use TeamPayer to play in the league and pay my league fee now?

Absolutely not. TeamPayer is just another option to use if you think it will help you get reimbursed more quickly or easily as the Captain. You are in no way obligated to use TeamPayer in order to play in Underdog's leagues.

So, are my team members paying ME with TeamPayer, or the league?

When one of your players pays a TeamPayer request, that amount goes to directly to the league. The league fee balance you are responsible for as the team Captain is then reduced accordingly. In other words, the players are paying the league directly, so that you don't have to collect money from them in person.

If I have several players who have not paid their TeamPayer requests when they expire Week 2 of the season, are they responsible for that money, or am I?

The Captain is still ultimately responsible for being sure that the Team Fee Balance is fully paid by Week 2 of the season. If you have sent TeamPayer Requests out that have not been paid by your players, you are still responsible for that part of the team fee once they expire. The League will not track down unpaid TeamPayer requests - upon expiration it is as if they did not exist.

I'm not clear on the Week 2 Deadline - what does that mean?

The Week 2 Deadline is basically the same payment deadline as always - team fees need to be fully paid by the second week of the league. If you are using TeamPayer to collect some of your team fee from your players, the Week 2 payment deadline is still in effect. Any outstanding requests will expire, and the Captain will be expected to pay the balance of the league fee by check at the game, or online.

Jack and Jill gave me checks right after I sent them TeamPayer requests... can I cancel those requests?

No problem. If you send a request out, but a player then pays you with a check, cash, or several rounds of drinks... you are able to go in and cancel that request. If the player clicks the TeamPayer request in their email bin they will be given a message that the request has been cancelled by the Captain, instead of being taken to the payment form.

I thought I'd have 10 players on the team and I sent TeamPayer requests based on that number... but then Bob and Jane were unable to play this season. Can I change the amount of my TeamPayer requests after I've sent them to account for the difference?

You can update the amounts of payment requests as many times as you need to from the TeamPayer panel in the Captain's lounge. Players will get a new updated request via email, with a message from you. If the player has already paid a request, however, you will have to work out the difference in person.

So, if I send out TeamPayer requests, is it OK if my players send in individual checks to the office for the amount I requested?

No - players must pay their requests online. The TeamPayer system is designed to help the Captain and the league manage collecting payment. The efficiency of the system rests on using the online payment option to reduce the administrative costs of handling traditional payments.

If I use TeamPayer, do I have to use it for ALL of my players... or can I just use it for Jim and Sara who always forget their checkbooks?

You can use TeamPayer for a just single player if you like, and collect money from the everyone else personally.

I sent some TeamPayer requests out, but now I want to bring a check to the FIRST game and collect money from my players in person... what should I do?

Not a problem. First, if you have unpaid requests outstanding, it is best to cancel all of them if you want to pay with a check. Note your 'Outstanding Team Fee' and write the check for that amount. If for some reason you don't cancel a request before it is paid by a player, the league will reimburse you for the amount you overpaid by check.

I'm a Captain who needs a new ipod... can I use this TeamPayer thing to make a little extra $ above and beyond the league fee by over charging my players?

Sorry, dude. First of all, the payments do not go to the Captain directly, they go to the league. Second, you can only request a total amount equal to the original league fee.

TeamPayer rules! Being a Captain is so much less stressful now that I don't worry about getting stuck for part of the team fee! Is it ok if I name my new goldfish TeamPayer?

You'd have to pay a small licensing fee, and the goldfish would have to wear a tiny goldfish sized TeamPayer swim cap at all times. If that's agreeable, then yes.

Players

I've played on a team for years, and I've never seen this... what is it?

TeamPayer is a new online tool that makes it easier for Captains and Players to share the payment of their team's league fee. When a Captain signs up a team, they can use TeamPayer to send payment requests to their players.

As a player, why should I use TeamPayer?

It's really a question of personal preference. If you're a fan of paying bills online, maybe this will be an easier way to pay your share of a team fee than paying your Captain in person. Using TeamPayer also means never having to remember to bring a check or cash to the game along with your football cleats or kickball mascot. If you like paying your Captain the old fashioned way, no problem. You're not obligated to use TeamPayer in any way.

I just got a payment request... if I pay this, where does my money go - to the Captain or the league?

When you pay a TeamPayer request, you are paying the requested portion of the team fee directly to the league. When this payment is made the league fee balance (which the Captain is responsible for) is reduced accordingly. In other words, you are paying your share directly to the league so that that Captain doesn't have to personally collect cash or a check.

I just got a payment request... Do I have to pay for the league through TeamPayer in order to participate? I was planning to buy my Captain a case of beer and some pretzels next week to cover it.

How you pay your share of a team fee is still between you and your Captain - you are in no way obligated to use TeamPayer in order to play in the league. However, if you have received a request that you do not intend to pay, please let the Captain know so they can cancel it and arrange something else with you.

I just got a payment request... Do I have to pay for the league through TeamPayer online... or can I just send a check to the Underdog office or bring one to the first game for the amount the Captain requested?

TeamPayer requests must be paid online - please do not send a check to the office (or bring one to the game). If you would like to pay by check, please pay your Captain personally, and he or she will just cancel your outstanding request for you. The TeamPayer system's efficiency rest on using the online payment form, vs administrating large numbers of traditional payments by rostered team players.

My Captain is a fun guy, but he's not exactly Honest Abe... he can't use TeamPayer to make money off his team members beyond the league fee, can he?

Nope. TeamPayer payments are made directly to the league, not the Captain - and the system will not allow Non-Honest Abe to send out requests to his players that total more than the original league fee.

What's the deal with the $2.75 'Transaction Fee' that's part of my TeamPayer request, anyway?

Providing a convenience service like TeamPayer and managing the resulting e-commerce transactions is not free, unfortunately. The transaction fee covers these costs.

I'm on a team and I think this would be a much better way to handle sharing the league fee, but my Captain isn't using it... what should I tell her to get it started?

Tell the Captain that they can find and use TeamPayer from their Captain's Lounge - the team admin panel they get when they sign up with the league. All of the info on TeamPayer is there for them to consider.

I love TeamPayer! Where do I get my TeamPayer baseball cap and sweatshirt?

TeamPayer gear will probably not be available at a store near you anytime soon. Sorry.

General

Is TeamPayer a service offered by a big evil financial corporation?

TeamPayer is not a third party service from Big Bad Bank USA... it is a service that was developed by Underdog in response to feedback from our Captains and Players who were looking for an easier way to share their league fees.

Are TeamPayer online payments secure?

TeamPayer online payment is secured using e-commerce industry standard 128-bit encryption to protect transaction data and user privacy.

I'm the Captain of on an adult rec soccer team in Chicago - is there a way I can use TeamPayer even though I'm not an Underdog member?

At this time, TeamPayer is only available to teams playing in Underdog leagues in Seattle and Portland.
