Summer Co-ed Kickball at Ballard Playfield Sundays

What do we want out of sports? We want teams playing at a high skill level while also creating as much entertainment as possible. It's rare that a sporting event delivers both for it's full duration. Which is why we took the even rarer step of awarding our POTW honors to both of the entire teams Hammer Pants and Booze On First for playing one of the most amazing games we've seen in a while. Call it the "Game of the Week" if you want. This was a game that had it all from start to finish, with no one player dominating but everyone making fantastic plays throughout. There were 5 or 6 great outfield catches from both teams. There were excellent throw outs from third to first. There were great beans, excellent bunts, and near misses at home plate and just about everywhere else. Take a look at some run totals from the ends of innings throughout the game: 2-1, 2-2, 5-2, 5-5, 10-5, 10-7, and... 10-10. That's right, folks, it was one of those games where you could say the team who kicked last had the best shot to win it, and that's exactly what happened. Hammer Pants were leading much of the game, but Booze on First refused to go away. After giving up a big inning in the 5th, they slowly built back until they had tied it in the bottom of the 7th with 2 outs, a runner on third, and a chance for the win. A kicker laid down a bunt to the pitcher, the throw was made, and she was out at first by no more than a hair. Tie game. Well, how else could it have ended??? Congratulations everyone on this fantastic, action packed game!

A fierce competitor, Joe earned player of the week. His skills as a pitcher helped keep his team in the game. Joe was the defensive leader out there, coaching his team on where to throw the ball and he also kept the umpire honest with his competitiveness and close plays at a couple of bases. As good as he was on defense, Joe is no slouch at the dish; He knows where to place the ball and how to get the most out of each kick. Great job Joe! A couple of honorable mentions are Shandy Boyle for her excellent team spirit and great work behind the plate. She is an olympic style sprinter getting out of the box to first! Great Work. Nick Kindel had a game winning kick which was nice in the bottom of the 7th! Andy Evans ending his team's game with a vicious dart to get a runner leaning too far off the base. There were some I forgot only because I was overwhelmed by the positive attitudes and great games. I definitely was treated to some fierce competition and great sportsmanship today. Thank you all.

Kreamer as he's affectionately called, came up huge for his Cajones squad. A 0-0 game thru six innings, the opposing Turkey Snazzlers take the lead in the top half of the 7th, and Kreamers time to shine approached.
After tying the game, it was up to Matt to knock home the victory. Like an Edgar Martinez swing, he stroked a basehit and became the hero for the day.

Maggie had a great week this week. She led her team to a win with some great pitching! She also bunted her tail off! She had some nice bunts and no one could get the fleet footed lady out! She scored 3 runs and had a great all around game. Great job Maggie.

There were some honorable mentions. Doug Orwiler played a great game as usual but this time he was playing on a strained hamstring! Great job Doug. Stephen Howey had a game winning big fly, the grand slam type, to lead his team to victory! Steve Chaddock played a mean third base for his team to help secure a victory and Marci Joy had a great catch to end their playoff game as well. Great job everyone!
