Opening week of Summer softball at Northacres Park featured a number of close games and come from behind wins. In a thrilling game, Amber Waltner led PB Army to a 7th inning, 4 run rally, over the Barking Geckos. Trailing by 3 runs entering the bottom of the 7th, Waltner hit a 2 run double that capped the 4 run rally. The win puts PB Army at the in 2nd place, 1/2 game behind the Jokers who swept their opening weekend doubleheader. Great job Amber and PB Army!

The crime: A victory was stolen
The perpetrator: Alyssa Hull

At approximately 5:40 pm on Sunday, the game between PB Army and the Mud Sharks was going along fine. There had been no major incidents to report, but I was uneasy. The score was 7-6 with PB Army on top in the bottom of the sixth inning. The perfect setting for some shady character to along and steal a win. With two on and two out Alyssa Hull (or whatever alias she's using now) came up to the plate. Despite trying to look innocent, it was obvious what her intent was. She confirmed it moments later by ripping a two run double into the gap, thereby stealing a victory for the Mud Sharks. If you encounter the suspect later this season and she's holding a bat, use caution or you might wind up as her next victim...

The word 'gamer' gets thrown around a lot. On Sunday afternoon, it was personified. Not only did Amber Waltner show up to play on Sunday with an injury that would have most of us sucking down cold ones on the couch, but she showed us how it was done with class.

Collecting three hits is hard enough, collecting three with a bad wheel that had her gimping down the line made us think of Kirk Gibson in the '88 World series. The only difference is that Amber played defense the whole game, even recording the final out on a pop-up. I think it's safe to say that Amber's feat was much more impressive. Way to go!!

The power was switched- ON. Kurt was like The Natural, decimating the stadium lights in a fireshow with 2 dingers and 6 RBI's. Mounting a comeback victory, Team Sexxy saddled Kurt up and rode him to the smokehouse. Meat and taters, anyone? HOF third baseman Brooks Robinson was on hand, remarking of the field complement to the plate fireworks: "He was lucky not to hurt himself".

JOKERS
Lots of people say things like it's not whether you win or lose, it's how you play the game. Well, Phil played in three games on Sunday along with hosting a season-ending weenie roast for all the competitors at Northacres. Anytime a team showed up short, Phil was there to pick up the slack. He ended up pitching 18 innings and is a true Iron Underdog.

Thanks Phil, and rest that arm this week!

Not only did Brady have a stellar game with the glove at the Hot Corner, making several spectacular plays, but he also had a great game at the plate. In one at-bat, Brady stepped up to the plate and behind in the count no balls and two strikes and did his best Roy Hobbs impersonation from the Natural and hit a moonshot that cleared the fence and the highway barrier...it was WAY outta here. We're not sure if he tore the cover off the ball, but we don't want to be a bat or a ball if he's at the plate.

Wanted to check the same bat multiple times after watching the hang time on Mike's three HR's Sunday. Final verdict: it wasn't the bat. Mike was a demon at the plate and a saint in the field, waging war on the blackberries in the name of defense. For a truly championship effort, congrats to our POTW!
