The Sweet Taste of Victory
Poop Sandwich

Two intense huddles gather on Court 2, one on either side of the net. It is the Championship game for Late Fall Midcore Volleyball at Sound Body and Mind Gym in Fremont, on Monday, December 16th, 2013. Two of Underdog's most spirited and committed teams, Poop Sandwich and Moss Adams, are playing for the title. It was the best match-up all season. Who would win? No one knew. Only the next 54 minutes could tell.
Each team broke their huddles with great enthusiasm that carried into the game. Poop Sandwich in their mix-matched, brightly colored workout clothes, Moss Adams in their matching maroon t-shirts with animal pictures, each one different and, most likely, representing their animal spirits aiding them in their journey to the final match. Both teams were strong from the get go. Powerful kills and amazing blocks showered both sides of the court.
Late in the first set Moss Adams was down 16-20, until "Screeming Eagle" (nicknames based on t-shirt animal spirit) brought her team back into the game and tied it 20-20. It was close, but Poop Sandwich claimed the first set 25-23. Both teams oozed with confidence and enthusiasm, with victory dances and swagger following nearly every play, and let me tell you, there were many great plays and saves. I even saw a "worm" after a failed dive. The excitement and optimism in this match were outstanding.
In the second set, Poop Sandwich went up early but then seemed to self-destruct, bringing Moss Adams back to take the lead. But it wasn't long before one nice block brought back Poop's confidence and intensity, decreasing the Moss Adam's lead to three. A couple of nice plays and strong kills later, the game was tied again at a score of 20-20. From here it was so close with back and forth serves, the scores slowly moving up, 21-21 to 22-22, then 23-23. Underdog staff were on the edge of their seats. In two quick points the second set was over, Moss Adams taking it with a score of 25-23.
As the final set of the Championship match began, Poop Sandwich took the lead quickly, going up 5-1. Moss Adams can't get anything past Joe at the Net. Joe and the Net, that's what we're calling Poop Sandwich's seemingly 7 foot tall guy. But Moss fights back! They go from down by 4, to only down by 2. Then a few superb serves from "Hootie" gives Moss Adams the lead at 8-6. Play continues in an even match, Poop regains control and ties the set 11-11. No one is going away without a fight tonight. Moss goes back up 14-13, but Joe and the Net is a blocking machine. Moss finds an answer and leads 17-14. An error gives the ball back to Poop Sandwich. Joe gets five aces in a row to take the lead. Moss finally breaks the spell and fights back. With just over a minute left in the final set Poop Sandwich is only up by two points, 22-20. As the buzzer sounds Poop Sandwich is ahead 23-21 but we let them play it out to the end. We have to. This is the most intense match-up we've seen. Within a minute it all ends. Poop Sandwich takes the title, winning set #3 25-21.
Poop Sandwich earned their title, not just this Monday night against the worthiest of worthy opponents, Moss Adams, but all season long. Their skills showed in the first week and continued to shine, along with their positive attitudes and sportsmanship, throughout the season. Congratulations to one of our favorite Underdog teams, Poop Sandwich!!!
