Spiked Punch came into this season with one goal in mind, and that is to win the championship. After having an undefeated season, Spiked Punch matched up against a high powered Murphy's Team. After a heated battle of great rallies and back-and-forth scoring, Spiked Punch squeaked by with a 2-0 victory.
Now was the time Spiked Punch has been waiting for, the championship match against another outstanding opponent, Shankopotamus. In the first set, Spiked Punch and Shankopotamus was trading points like a great boxing match trading blows. But like a great prize fighter, Dan came swinging hard, changing the momentum of the first set in Spiked Punch's favor. With a match point, Gavin secured the first set with a thunderous spike winning 25-16.
In the second set, Spiked Punch jumped out to an early lead as they looked to have deflated Shankopotamus. After a few mistakes, Shankopotamus stormed back to take control of the match 11-17. Spiked Punch called a much needed timeout to get their act together. Everyone seemed to be on the same page as they had a look in their eyes that no way were they letting this opportunity slip away. Like a great comeback story, Amy spiked a ball that shook the gym, shifting the momentum in Spiked Punch's favor. The defense stepped up huge as Helen covered the floor, digging spikes to save points. Feeding off the energy, Spiked Punch managed to tie the match at 18-18. That is when Randy and Dan put on a masterful clinic of aerial power attacks. With the beautiful sets from Kelley, Dan flew through the air smashing the ball to open spots on the court. Spiked Punch took the lead at 24-23 when Gavin repeated his first set performance as he came up swinging, smashing a spike through the blocking hands, winning 25-23.
Great job Spiked Punch. An amazing flawless season that ended with an amazing championship run!
Gavin had an unbelievable amount of focus as you could see the fire in his eyes. His outstanding play helped lead his team to the championship as Gavin crushed spike after spike on his opponents. Gavin was a momentum changer all night, picking his team up every time they needed a point. His performance came on the biggest stage of our Underdog league and Gavin did not disappoint.
Randy is one of those players that is just fun to watch. He constantly has a positive attitude and when he does something great, he gets excited, but in a modest way. Tonight Randy was excelled on the back line with a number of consistent and powerful serves. He also had some wicked kills that left him walking away with a giddy smile. Keep up the awesome play and attitude Randy!
Spiked punch is back after a season off, but your couldn't tell by they skills on the court. It started off a little rusty, but soon was as thing of beauty. One player that stood out was a new member, Amy. She not only brought some diving and hitting skills, but a great attitude and team spirit to boot. Its going to be a great season watching this team....and many others too!
