Notes

First Place

Summer Softcore Kickball Downtown T/Th

The championship game is one to remember for both teams. Kicked Your Balls came out strong in the first inning and scored 3 quick runs. The Camandos' spirits were not defeated but it looked like Kicked Your Balls were going to pull away. They scored more runs the following inning and built a huge lead. Midway through the game, The Camandos had a huddle and I overheard the captain, 'Hey, let's go out there and have fun like we've had all season. Don't worry about the score, okay?' They promptly scored several runs and they began to mount a comeback. Although they were not the underdog, we had a 'little engine that could' type of team on the field. Kicked kept the pressure on and it came to the last inning. There were a couple of crazy plays that put The Camandos in the positon to win the game. With the bases loaded, Tony Marino kicked in the game winning run with a nice sacrifice fly. It was both exciting and heartbreaking to watch as one team celebrated a magnificient win and the other walked off knowing without that one weird inning, they'd be celebrating the entire off season. It was an honor to call the game and spectate as much as an umpire can. Thank everyone (each game) for a fabulous season.

POTW: Sarah Rainas

The Camandos

Sarah had a great week. In her first at bat she hoofed out a bunt and tumbled into first. But she didn't let a fall take her out of the game. On defense she was the core of the Commando's defense, coming up with lots of great plays at 2nd base.

Tuesday, July 14

POTW: Josh Gouch

The Camandos

There are some kickball players who merely play for fun and treat the sport as recreation. Josh Gouch goes beyond this attitude and reveres kickball as a way of life. Josh was rounding 2nd Base and going to 3rd, and it did not appear that he would make it in time. But Josh cranked up his level of intensity and with a burst of speed and a spectacular slide, he managed to get to 3rd just in time. Josh lives for this kind of adrenalin rush, and so the next time he went to 3rd, he again reached the base safely through a slide although the ball was quite far away. Josh will slide no matter the occasion as he continues to tear up the diamond and intimidate the infielders.
