Underdog Volleyball - Skill Level Overview
We're proud to say that our leagues span almost the full range of skill levels - from first time volleyball players to seasoned veterans with club and college experience. It's really only the elite players that you won't find in Underdog volleyball, which is just the way we like it. As with all of our leagues, a fun laid back atmosphere comes first.

As more players with a background in the sport have joined the league, it has been useful to give more detail on how the three Underdog skill levels (Softcore, Midcore, and Hardcore) relate to the more standardized skill levels used in club and tournament play. Captains and Indy's should both find the following descriptions helpful, which are loosely based on how the USAV and AVP structure their skill divisions. As many coed teams have players that fit into more than one of these categories, pick the one that best reflects the level and atmosphere that you're looking for as a group. If you still have questions, feel free to contact us (below) via email or phone!

Underdog Division
Standard Volleyball Skill Level Descriptions
Softcore

New Player - I’ve knocked the ball around at a barbeque - but I’ve never played in an organized volleyball match or tournament before.
Recreational - I played volleyball in gym class back in the day, and a few times since. I know what I’m doing and I'm fairly athletic, but I’ve never played in an organized volleyball league or tournament
Midcore

B - I’ve played some high school or club volleyball growing up, but my skills are rusty - or I’ve played in a few organized leagues and my skills have progressed well beyond a beginner level. I can pass, set, and hit with consistency.
Hardcore
Hardcore matches are
all officiated, and are played
in facilities that allow for more
space around the court

BB - I’ve played competitively at a high level in the past, and continue to play in leagues and tournaments multiple times a year. I expect my team to run an offense and complete the pass, set, hit sequence on almost every play. I have a position(s) that I generally to play.
A (and above) - I have college or advanced club level experience. I participate in other A or higher tournaments and leagues regularly. I am highly skilled - but I am looking for a laid back league experience that emphasizes a coed format and fun over extremely competitive play.
