An Almost Decisive Victory

Thursday’s volleyball championship game between Indecisive and previously undefeated Monkey Lovers displayed a great deal of skill, heart and soul on the court. After losing to Monkey Lovers 3-0 during the regular season, Indecisive was back with a vengeance. Both teams started out strong and volleyed control of the game. Smart shots, powerful kills, big blocks and awesome digs were flying all over the court. The teams were neck and neck for almost the entire first set which ended with a score of 27-25 in favor of Indecisive.
Neither team seemed fazed as they went into the second set. However, as the game got underway, Monkey Lovers seemed to have more momentum on their side. Lou and Greame brought out the big guns in the front row and each racked up a number of kills and blocks. On the other side of the court, Indecisive started to crumble as Monkey Lovers took charge of the game. Mary, Monkey Lover ’s setter, had her usual hustle going on as she assisted her team to an effective victory of 25-14. Indecisive walked away from set #2 with team captain Will saying, “Well, let’s shrug that one off…” Apparently, his teammates listened.
The final set started off with another close race between the two teams. the teams were closely matched and eventually shared a score with 14. At this time, Indecisive’s James headed back to begin serving. Monkey Lovers struggled to successfully return his serves due to a combination of team errors and Indecisive’s ability to capitalize during rallies. Nick, Will and James continued their usual strong arm presence, but Emily and Meg certainly helped lead their team tonight from the front row. The score got farther and farther apart as James went on an 11 point serving streak to finish the game and give Indecisive two consecutive championships!

Gale Force Winds Take Over the Court

Despite the lack of rising waters, you might have thought that a natural disaster hit the Underdog courts on Thursday. In the regular season match between Block You Like A Hurrican (BYLAH) and Heavy Setters there were many great rallies back and forth and it ended with a 2-1 record in favor of BYLAH. During the Semi-finals, Heavy Setters took out the #1 seed to once again face BYLAH. As the teams stepped on the court it looked to be a good match, but as the games got underway Heavy Setters seemed to fall apart a bit. Many players were hustling after the ball, but connections were just not being made. On the BYLAH side scrappy defense and a strong net presence were major attributes, but it was their aggressive and accurate serving that really secured BYLAH’s championship victory.

An All Around Great Game

Cold Turkeys and Spiked Punch each went to 3 sets in their semi-finals matches, but they didn’t seem too worn out. Their face off started out on a very even play field. Joe and Andrew from Cold Turkeys and Olin from Spiked Punch all dominated the front row for their teams with both blocks and kills. On the rest of the court their teammates were hustling to reach every ball possible and save many from hitting the ground. Set number one ended with a short run for Cold Turkeys, giving them a score of 25-21.
Set 2, was another close one. Spiked Punch took the bitter taste in the mouth and converted it to energy and power. Hits were getting harder, blocks were getting bigger and digs were getting lower. After going back and forth with points, Spiked Punch went on a solid run. However, Cold Turkeys was not giving up without a fight. Once they got the ball back, Kellie stepped up to the back line and went on an 8 point serving streak to tie the game. Energy continued to be high on both sides of the court and the teams cheers were getting louder and louder at every won point. Major cheers went up as the game came to a close with a Cold Turkeys victory of 25-22. Way to go Champs!
