About USL Softball
Underdog Sports Leagues offers co-ed Softball leagues during Spring, Summer, and Fall. Spring and Summer play is on Saturday’s and Sunday’s. Fall play is on weeknights. Our level of play is recreational... the emphasis is squarely on having a good time out on the diamond with teammates and opponents, alike. While USL does enforce several gender rules for fielding and batting line-ups, there are no specific rules with regards to play (i.e. you don’t have to swap out 11inch balls, bat left handed, or stand on one foot and swing a paper-mache bat if you are a male). For an overview of rules, see the FAQ’s and rules below (in depth rules will be provided to teams upon registration).

Softball continues to be one USL's most popular sports, and every league tends to fill up (often on the first day of sign-ups). In order to have the best chance of getting into your league of choice, be sure to note the day that registration opens and submit your sign-up online early that day.

- And no we do not plan on offering men’s only Softball leagues, despite your requests, but you can request them anyway if you want to.

Softball Rules Overview [Full rulebook provided upon registration]:

General Softball guidelines of ASA (Amateur Softball Association) slow pitch softball where appropriate and as interpreted by USL umpires. Umpires have final calls on balls and strikes, fielding calls and any other disputes or appeals.

Games are to last no more than 1 hour and 25 minutes.

7 inning games - 9 run maximum per inning (except in the 7th or last inning of the game as declared by the umpire)/ 12 run mercy option after the 4th inning of completed play. “Carry-over” runs past 9 count before inning is called due to 9 run max.

6 men/ 4 women on the field at all times. Teams may play down 1 player at 6 men/3 women or down two players at 5 men/3 women. Teams may not play down two players at 6 men/ 2 women. Players may not pick up more that 3 non-roster players as subs for any game, otherwise it will count as an automatic forfeit. Non-roster players may never be used during the playoffs.

Fielding - Teams must have a minimum of 2 women in the infield and outfield while playing defense (Only 1 female in an all female pitcher catcher combo counts towards the infield minimum). A team can only play with more than 2 females in the outfield if they are playing with more than 4 females during the game. Gender encroachment rules apply.

Batting - Teams may never have more than 2 males batting consecutively in order in the line-up. Teams may never have more than 2 females batting consecutively in the line-up. Team are allowed to 'bat the line-up' if they designate to do so before the game starts.

Walks - After any walk by a male on 4 straight pitches with 2 outs in the inning, where a female batter is on deck, the female batter will have the option to also walk or may choose to bat.

Substitutions can only occur defensively between innings except in cases of injury. Players re-inserted in the line-up after being subbed for must assume their former spot in the batting order.

Players who show up late on a team playing down, can be inserted into the lowest possible spot on the line up that does not effect the gender order.

SOFTBALL FAQs

I sleep with my bat and polish it every day...can I use it in your league?
Sure. You're welcome to bring and use your own bat assuming it is not excessively out of whack with what would be considered a "normal league bat." In other words, if your bat isn't 2 feet wide, 7 feet long, and made of a cheese and bamboo combination, it's probably ok to use. USL uses the ASA list of banned bats including triple-walled and the infamous Miken II. USL umps have the final say on all equipment related inquiries.

How do co-ed/gender rules play into a USL softball game?
USL has specific rules with regards to batting line-ups and field positioning for gender players. In addition, USL strictly enforces "gender encroachment" - meaning if a male player obviously comes in to make a defensive play that was to be made by a female player the out/play will not count with the batter being awarded an extra base.
Other general rules like courtesy runners, catch-and-carry, and one courtesy foul ball before striking out apply. All USL batters start at a 0-0 count. Specific rules are provided upon registering a team.

What do I need to bring with me?
USL provides all of the various assorted items you would need for a softball game including:

Equipment - Softballs, catchers mask, etc.
Fields - We reserve your times and provide sporty orange cones.
Supervision - Amusing and charming umpires will join you at every game to call balls and strikes. A second ump may be added for playoff games.

The only thing you need to bring are cleats/shoes (no metal spikes!!), bats, a team helmet(s) if you prefer to use one while batting, and a glove. Some teams also like to make their own shirts/jerseys, which is fine.

Ok, I'm signing up. What if I need to change my roster?
Roster changes are allowed up until the 3rd week of any USL season. Softball rosters should never be larger that 15 people. After the third week you can only modify your roster by applying for a special exemption due to injury or other weird/unfortunate occurrence. During registration, you will set up a log-in to the Captain's Lounge - a team admin panel that let's you update your roster, as well as do other cool stuff like emailing your teammates, tracking who owes you money, and signing up for future seasons.

Cool, I'm signed up. What about practices?
Some teams practice several times a week. Some don't practice at all. Unfortunately, USL does not provide practice time during the regular season on our fields. Your are welcome to show up early and practice/warm-up on the side, or practice on your own.
